    CASING: DOORS & WINDOWS

    Just as base moulding (baseboards) and crown moulding enhance the beauty and elegance of a room, as well as conceal any ceiling or floor flaws, case moulding is used to conceal any door or window flaws. This trim conceals any “out of shape” forms surrounding doors and windows while giving the room that “polished” look. Casing also creates a reveal around your door frames to add depth and style to any opening.

    We recommend the casings to be the same style as the rest of the moulding for a consistent and finished look. One of the most important considerations for your casing is the width, as this will define the area covered to the sides and top of windows or doors. Anything from ceiling height or room depth and size affects how the trim will look in that room. For the best casing installers in the GTA contact Trim Group today by email or call us at (416) 800-4271, and we will help you take your design to the next level.

    WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A CASING?

    The purpose of a casing is to cover the space between the frames and the jambs of your windows or doors. Generally when these two interior elements are installed, there is a gap left to allow for a little play room in the installation, as well as squaring off the door or window in its cavity. Although this gap can be sealed with spray foam or insulation, often the casing is enough to create an air tight seal, reducing heat loss and providing noise reduction.

    Casing is also, of course, an important design element as it is highly visible and should flow with the style of the rest of your trims. To pick the right casing installation contact the professionals at Trim Group today!

    TYPES OF DOOR CASINGS

    There are plenty of style to choose from and we would recommend you take a little time to figure out which style goes best with your home. If you are ever in doubt, feel free to reach out to us for advice. Here are just a few options available to you:

    • Minimal;
    • Colonial;
    • Farmhouse;
    • Craftsman.

    Casing comes in a variety of materials but the most popular option is MDF. It is cheaper than wood and more flexible, making it easier to work with. Although wood is sturdier, most of our clients choose to go with MDF for the price savings. Here are some of the materials you can pick from:

    • Wood – traditionally the most popular material for moulding due to its rich look. In many aspects, solid wood is longer-lasting and sturdier than MDF or PVC;
    • PVC (Polyvinyl chloride, a type of plastic) – unlike wood, which absorbs water at a rate of about 8%, PVC has only a 0.5% water absorption rate. This makes it a preferred choice for bathrooms or any rooms that may experience a higher level of moisture;
    • MDF (medium-density fibreboard) – while MDF is moisture-resistant not waterproof, the price savings and variety of sizes, thicknesses, and finishes makes it an appealing option for any room that does not have high levels of moisture;
    • Vinyl.

    INSTALLATION PROCESS

    MEASUREMENTS

    The process is a little trickier for windows and doors because of the reveal. The reveal is the space between the edge of your door or window jambs and the trim. The reveal defines how much of the jamb will be visible. The perfect size is a balance of best practise and personal preference. We will be sure to guide you through this decision in the first step.

    STEP 1

    PREP

    Preparing the material: cutting then sanding. Some even paint the material before installing it.

    STEP 2

    GLUING & NAILING

    The next step of the process is gluing and nailing the casing material onto the surface. Nailing the casing is where most DIY'ers experience issues. Firing the nail the wrong way can cause a blowout, where the nail is bent to one side and shoots out the door jamb. This can damage the jamb and create a ton of extra work.

    STEP 3

    FINISH

    Any nail holes are carefully patched and the tiny gaps in the corners are filled to create a look of a single piece of casing. At this stage, the project is complete.

    STEP 4

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Can a casing be painted?

    Yes, the casing can be painted, and you can choose a style that works the best for your home. They can be lighter/darker than the wall paint, they can match the walls, or you can choose a splash of colour to bring attention to the details.

    What is the difference between window casing, crown moulding and trim work?

    The main difference lies in where these trim elements are installed. Casing is a type of trim that is installed on windows and doors while crown moulding goes between the top of your wall and ceiling. Often the materials chosen will differ in size and design but both of these jobs are a type of trim work.

    Is installing casing necessary?

    Casing is definitely something that you need, without it you will expose the inner elements of your casing and doors. Not only is this aesthetically awful, you would also be losing out on sound proofing and temperature control.

    As with any project in your home there are little know tricks and tips that come with years of experience. The difference between a DIY trim install vs professional comes down to the seams and details. If you would like to have a perfect installation with no gaps or imperfections, a Trim Group casing installer will bring your design to life! Call us today at (416) 800-4271.
