    BASEBOARDS INSTALLATION

    Floor moulding, better known as baseboards, will completely transform the look of every room. With a huge variety of style options and sizes, as well as the decision to introduce shoe moulding or quarter rounds, you need to do a little research first on what might fit your space. You should also consider the overall design of your home to help you make a choice.

    Aside from the design aspect, baseboards also conceal imperfections between the wall and the floor, and protects walls from kicks, abrasion, and furniture damage. If you are also opting for crown moulding you should confirm that the two elements work together in a consistent style.

    The modern baseboard styles that are in trend are usually very simple, but their simplicity allows for other design elements to shine. No matter the style, the trick to great looking baseboards is to achieve perfectly precise and tight corners.

    A lot of homes don’t have perfectly angled (90°) walls, which causes a lot of problems for DIY installations. There are a lot of tips and tricks to get perfect inside and outside corners, making it imperative to be an expert in using an angle ruler for precise degrees, and a miter saw for perfect cuts.

    BASEBOARD TYPES

    The board at the base of your wall is the simplest example of a baseboard.

    One rule we always follow is “choosing baseboards tall enough to be a distinct accent without being overwhelming.” The height and style are the two most important elements of choosing your baseboards. However you should also consider whether you should introduce a shoe mould or quarter round, which is an additional piece that sits at the bottom of the baseboard. Here is a gallery of the most used baseboards:

    • Three-Inch Rounded or Stepped Baseboard;
    • Flat Baseboard Molding;
    • Mid-Sculpted Baseboard Molding;
    • Tall Sculpted Baseboard Molding.

    BASE MOULDING MATERIALS

    Before choosing your baseboard’s height and shape, you should first identify the appropriate baseboard material for your space. As with any of the moulding work we provide (Crown Moulding, Casings, Wainscoting, etc) the material should be chosen based on factors other than just price. Baseboards were traditionally made from wood since they must withstand significant damage. However, if you are worried about moisture, composite materials such as MDF (medium-density fiberboard) may be used because they are less expensive and resistant to mould and mildew. In addition, PVC or vinyl are excellent moisture-resistant materials for outdoor spaces and bathrooms, and medium-density fiberboards are cost-effective alternatives.

    INSTALLATION PROCESS

    WALL MEASUREMENTS

    The project starts with measuring the length of each wall, taking measurements of the angles, mapping that out, calculating how many inside corners, outside corners, and returns are needed, and proceeding to the miter saw.

    STEP 1

    CUTS

    Next, the boards are cut precisely using a miter saw. Even a minor offset in the cut can result in a wasted piece of trim, quickly ballooning your costs. That is why a professional baseboard installer from Trim Group can expedite and keep your project costs at a minimum.

    STEP 2

    GLUING & NAILING

    The chosen material is glued or nailed to the surface. The application depends on what is behind your walls as the nails used can easily penetrate water pipes. The nail holes are then concealed and we caulk any gaps created by imperfections in walls.

    STEP 3

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Are baseboards nailed or glued?

    This depends on the location of the baseboard. More precisely, it depends on what is inside the wall. Although baseboards are attached to the studs in a wall, there is still a chance that they may miss this stud. If we have any suspicion that there may be ducts, or worse, water pipes in the wall where the baseboards are going, it is a safer option to use glue. Otherwise brad nails are used for normal application.

    Can baseboards be painted?

    Baseboards should be painted as they mostly come primed. You may purchase painted baseboards but this adds unnecessary cost to your project and has much fewer options than having a professional do it.

    How high should baseboards be?

    This is a question we often get and it largely depends on the size of your ceilings. We would recommend 6`` baseboards for standard 8 foot ceiling, but this is just a general guideline. The overall design and preference should really be the defining factors.

    What is the most popular baseboard style?

    Much like fashion, popularity of baseboards is often changing. Currently the modern look found in many homes is that of plain baseboards with no design. However be wary, the popular designs may have a shorter shelf life and higher price. We recommend that you pick the design you like and that fits with your home as opposed to what may be trending.

    Do modern homes use baseboards?

    Baseboards are timeless decor; they would never be out of style. The difference comes down to the type of design of these baseboards. To help you pick the best option, contact Trim Group today.
