    CROWN MOULDING INSTALLATION

One of the most eye-catching elements that adds sophistication, class and style to the home is beautiful crown moulding. Crown moulding is installed in the connection where walls and ceiling meet, eliminating sharp corners and introducing sophisticated designs that come in plenty of shapes and sizes to suit the look of any home. It is a type of trim that is often very ornate and incorporates intricate designs. Although there is a wide variety of styles and materials, the most common types of crown moulding are made from MDF.

Crown moulding trim comes in a variety of lengths and depending on your application your best bet is to have the maximum sized pieces that will fit on your ceiling. Even though crown always consists of multiple pieces, the longer pieces eliminate as many connections, creating a more consistent look.

    CROWN INSTALLATION PROCESS

    MEASUREMENTS

The first step of installing crown moulding is taking measurements of all the wall lengths, create a layout of the rooms, and use this guide for a precise crown moulding install every time.

    STEP 1

    MAKING CUTS

Next, our crown moulding professionals use the latest tools (with the sharpest blades) to make precise cuts. This step requires experience and training to avoid wasting materials and to ensure that the trim connections are perfect throughout the house.

    STEP 2

    FITTING

After the cuts are done, we dry-fit the crown on the wall to verify that the (often) offset walls and corners do not alter the design. With that confirmed we use a combination of glue and brad nails to secure the crown in place.

    STEP 3

    CAULKING

Caulking is an important, yet extremely finicky, step that fills in the tiny gaps left between the trim and the wall/ceiling. This step is imperative to having the crown moulding flow seamlessly to the wall and ceiling.

    STEP 4

    IS CROWN MOULDING OUTDATED?

It is called CROWN moulding for a reason, this accent features gives a royal feeling to any home. Starting with the ancient Egyptians and followed by the Greeks and Romans, to this day crown moulding is a timeless and refined element. Aside from the styles, the only main difference throughout the centuries is the material used to construct crown moulding. Originally, it was made with stone. As time progressed materials shifted towards a lighter and easier to manage option with wood. Now there are more and more modern materials to choose from, such as medium-density fiberboard, polyurethane (a plastic material), foam, and PVC (widely produced synthetic polymer of plastic). Although wood is still a popular choice, due to the price savings most home owners go with the MDF option for the best bang for their buck.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you paint before or after crown moulding?

This has a lot to do with personal preference, but we recommend painting trims after they have been installed. Even with the most accurate installation scuff marks are bound to happen. In addition when the trims are nailed in the holes have to be filled in and painted. For a cleaner look we recommend painting after the install has occurred.

Should crown moulding match the walls or the ceiling?

Although trim paint is a little different from ceiling paint due to the application material, we would recommend matching the crown to the ceiling. This make it appear more expansive and creates a clear separate between the walls and ceiling.

Should you have crown moulding in every room?

This depends on how consistently the overall design of your house flows. If you have different styles between the floors then you can choose different styles, or even choose not to install crown in some rooms. However if you wish to keep a consistent look throughout the whole house then it is a good idea to have the main rooms use the same style of trim throughout.

Does crown moulding add value to a house?

If you are renovating your house, you already know that the bones of a house hold huge value for its longevity. You also know that once the shell of the house is completed, even the smallest design elements will make a different impression on those that visit. Crown moulding and baseboards play a huge role in this impression because the adorn most of the walls and ceilings in your house. This has a direct and significant impact on the value of your home.
