    FINISH CARPENTRY

    Finish carpentry refers to all trim details that go into completing the look of your home, creating a consistent feel throughout every room. These elements often flow throughout your whole house, complementing the design features of your furniture, accents and paint.

    You know finish carpentry is done correctly when a seamless feeling of design is felt throughout every room.

    WHAT IS FINISH CARPENTRY?

    Baseboards, stair rails, crown moulding, window and door casings are all examples of the interior trim and millwork that fall within the finish carpentry definition. Finish carpenters (also called trim carpenters) must understand and work with various materials and tools, such as different types of wood, MDF, PVC and more. Knowing the weaknesses and strengths of each material will allow for precise and long-lasting finish. Trim Group experienced carpenters are also able to read blueprints and follow detailed directions because everything must be measured, cut, and installed to exact specifications.

    For example, our carpenters must know about framing, so when we install baseboards or crown moulding they will not sag and loosen up after one year.

    Our trim carpenters have years of experience with professional tools such as: table saws, portable dual-compound chop saws, sanders, and nailers for smoothing.   This allows us to create precise and seamless designs with whatever trims you are interested in installing.

    WHY DO YOU NEED FINISH CARPENTRY?

    Trim Group finish carpenters are responsible for ensuring that the doors and windows in a house function properly and that all of the final design elements are consistent with each other. Our skilled and experienced carpenters can transform a bathroom, kitchen, doorway, floor, and ceiling into a work of art. With those precise touches, our carpenters improve the home’s appearance and significantly improve market value.

    Experienced carpenters will have a knack for accurate visualization of the chosen designs so you will have a clear vision of what your home will look like after the project is finished. Our trim professionals have an eye for details, and always know what styles will work best together.

    TYPES OF MATERIALS WE USE

    Depending on the client’s preferences and styles we work with various materials including wood, plaster, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), PVC, glass, and more.

    • Traditionally almost every moulding was done with wood. You can choose between hard woods or soft woods. They are easily trimmed and painted to your preference but are pricier than the MDF alternative;
    • A less expensive option and that looks the closest to wood is MDF (medium-density fibreboard). It is installed the same way as wood, but it is a little less sturdy. Modern trim work is performed mostly in MDF due to the price and flexibility of materials, allowing us to hide imperfections in wall angles and uneven corners. Unless the trim is in a high-traffic area, MDF is strong enough to withstand everyday wear and tear;
    • PVC is a material that is best used in bathrooms or places with significant humidity. PVC doesn’t rot, bend, or twist making it the perfect choice if it comes in contact with water.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    What is the difference between rough and finish carpentry?

    The term rough carpentry refers to the framing or the construction of the home's bones, such as: roof, wall studs and ceiling/floor beams. Finish carpentry refers to the interior work that occurs after the drywall and floors have been put up.

    How much does finish carpentry cost?

    This is highly dependent on the complexity of the trim work to be performed. For the best prices and quality of the results of your projects, contact the experts at Trim Group.

    Is finish carpentry a messy job?

    Not when we perform the work. We ensure that all the cutting, which creates the most dust, is done outside. For any finishing touches that may create any sort of dust we ensure that your floors and walls are protected. When we are finished we perform a thorough cleaning of the area where we worked and leave it cleaner than we found it!

    Do I need to paint after the project is completed?

    Yes the trims must be painted upon project completion but this is where you can get creative. Although a lot of people opt to keep the trims in a plain white color, you can add a splash of color to match other accents.
