    WHAT IS WAINSCOTING?

    Wainscoting applies to wood or MDF panelling (now it can be done with various other materials as well) on the lower portion of an interior wall. Wainscoting is typically installed in the dining room, living room, foyer or even on the side of your stairs. Dating from the 18th century, it has protected walls from damage as well as marks from footwear or vacuums ever since. Today it has mainly a decorative purpose. Wainscot panelling is a timeless design element that gives elegance to a home. You can use it to provide subtle texture, a flash of colour, or a complex pattern.

    WHERE IS WAINSCOTING USED?

    Although Wainscoting is mainly used for decoration, its primary protective purpose remains. Therefore you are advised to use wainscot panelling at places more likely to get damaged, such as staircases, entrance halls, kids’ rooms, bathrooms, and pet-friendly areas.

    WHICH MATERIALS CAN WAINSCOTING BE MADE WITH?

    Traditionally made from wood, wainscoting panels nowadays are made from various materials. Medium-density fibreboard (MDF), plywood, and plastic are just some of the options. Each of these materials has pros and cons; you can learn about them by contacting our wainscoting installation professionals to find your perfect fit. We will also provide information on the type of style will be best suit for your home.

    MAIN TYPES OF WAINSCOTING

    There are many Wainscot panelling types, and the opportunities are endless with custom options. Wainscoting is often confused with panelling, otherwise known as accent walls. Although the materials and styles are similar for the two, the difference lies in how much of the wall these elements cover. Accent walls refer to a design executed on the whole wall, while wainscot covers a third, or at most, half of the wall. Our experience shows that these styles are the most sought out:

    • Board & Batten Wainscoting;
    • Raised Panel Wainscoting;
    • Flat Panel Wainscoting;
    • Overlay Wainscoting;
    • Beadboard Wainscoting.

    They can all be mixed to create a design that would fit your overall vision and character.

    Building or renovating your space with Wainscoting will create a beautiful accent and add sophistication to any room. So call Trim Group today at (416) 800-4271 and let us help you find the best option that fits your budget.

    INSTALLATION PROCESS

    PICKING A STYLE

    The first step for installing Wainscoting is to choose the RIGHT style for the room or the house. Without visualizing and mapping out the style first, a wainscoting installer runs the risk of of guessing what you want. For this reason you need to have an idea of how the finished product will look like, before the wainscoting is installed.

    STEP 1

    MEASUREMENTS

    We will then measure the space to ensure the design is perfectly symmetrical. This will also allow us to account for any outlets and incorporate them into the design.

    STEP 2

    PREPARATION

    In order to have a precise application, we map out the placement of the panelling to ensure precise cut and avoid wasted materials. Our wainscoting installers proceed to make precise cuts and prepare the pieces of trim for installation.

    STEP 3

    WAINSCOTING INSTALL

    We proceed to install the pre-cut materials and ensure that every part of the wainscoting is securely attached.

    STEP 4

    FINAL TOUCHES

    We cover the nail holes, and after sanding the surface, your wall paneling is ready for painting.

    STEP 5

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    What's the difference between Wainscoting and paneling?

    Wainscoting is a type of paneling. Paneling can be done from ceilings to floors, while Wainscoting covers half or ⅓ of the wall.

    Is wainscoting outdated?

    In the newest article from Insider, Alessandra Wood, the vice president of style for the interior designer Modsy, explains the home trends for 2022: ``Dark wainscoting is a trend that has blown up in the design world in 2021 and will continue to rule 2022. Wainscoting in a deep, saturated color is popular because it leans into the moody color trend, adding an elevated look to any room with features that make the space look much more expensive.``

    Are beadboard and Wainscoting the same thing?

    Beadboard is one of the styles of Wainscoting, although it can be used everywhere. You can even see it on the ceilings.

    Can you paint Wainscoting?

    Yes, wainscoting can be painted. You can paint it the same colour as the walls or give an accent to the design by picking a lighter/darker colour.

    Can Wainscoting be installed over tile?

    Yes, Wainscoting can be installed over tile, but it is not the best practice.
